We all know that Texas takes its long, hot, summers very seriously. But, we can still have fun, and get great photos, even in the Texas heat. Those long summer evenings can bring out some real photo magic with the right preparation. Here are some helpful things to keep in mind when scheduling your summer photography session.
What to Wear
Planning your outfits can be especially important in the summer! You want to be comfortable, with the right amount of airflow, with colors that minimize any potential sweat. Neutral colors like black, dark gray, and navy, along with light colors like white, beige and pale pink, can help hide sweat marks. Also, wearing a thin, cotton underlayer under your outfit will help absorb sweat, and prevent it from soaking through to your outer layers.
Cotton, linen, rayon, modal and viscose are all fabric choices that should keep you cooler during a summer photo session. For cotton and linen, look for blended fabrics with just a hint of give, to cut down on wrinkles as well. Find additional information on fabrics comfortable for the summer here!
The Details
While morning sessions can be cooler, they often come along with higher humidity. If you have concerns about fly aways and frizz, consider wearing your hair in an updo, or using a small amount of hair oil to keep your hair smooth in that summer humidity. If you are wearing sandals to your session, don’t forget to remove any chipped polish on your toes.
Stay Hydrated
Bring water, or other clear liquids, for everyone in the family. Consider adding electrolytes to your drinks, for extra hydration power. Nobody feels good when they are overheated and thirsty. We can take breaks for people to hydrate and cool down, so that everyone feels their best during your summer session.
Location Matters
You’ll want to keep the summer sun in mind, when thinking about your location. Areas with lots of trees can help offer longer periods of shade, making it more comfortable to take photos outdoors. Downtown Dallas also offers shade with the tall buildings. You can also consider something unique for the end of your session, with public fountains or dancing waters as a way to cool down and see images with genuine joy in them. If you’re feeling unsure on location ideas, I am always happy to help provide options for you to choose from.
If it’s just not comfortable for you to be out in the heat at all; you can consider a lifestyle session in your own home. I’m happy to bring additional lighting, if need be. My dedicated home studio in Plano is also available for limited family sessions for your immediate family, or studio maternity sessions.
Before You Go
Other things that will be helpful during your summer photography session include a lightweight sunscreen, bug spray (especially in natural environments), and blotting papers or similar to mop up any glimmers of sweat. As always, make sure you give yourself plenty of time on the day of, so you’re not rushing around and feeling overheated before we even get started.
I hope these summer photography tips have given you a little more confidence in booking a photography session this summer.
